Governments and Public Officials

Major governments and national public institutions maintain dedicated officials who specialize in domain name governance and actively participate in ICANN and other Internet-related bodies. Western countries like France count many public well-known representatives. There are less numerous in the USA, Canada or even Germany, where the boundary between the private and public sectors is tighter. Due to cultural factors, Asian countries do not count many key individuals in domain name governance, as they tend to emphasize institutional roles over individual recognition. The prominent figures from regions like Africa and Latin America are not numerous either, because these regions carry less geopolitical and economic weight in the global Internet infrastructure.

From North America, Byron Holland (Canada) leads the .CA registry.

In Europe, Pierre Bonis and Henri Verdier (France), Roelof Meijer (Netherlands), Peter Van Roste (CENTR), Wim Degezelle (Belgium), Andreas Musielak (Germany) and Nick Wenban-Smith (UK) are active in various capacities across policy and registry leadership.

In Latin America, Nico Caballero represents Latin American interests in Internet governance. Sebastián Bellagamba, Demi Getschko, and Olga Cavalli have played major roles in regional Internet development and ICANN processes.

From Africa, Pierre Dandjinou, Mamadou Lo, Ali Hadji Mmadi, and Luc Missidimbazi represent the continent in ICANN governance and stakeholder engagement. Manal Ismail represents governmental perspectives within ICANN’s policy processes.

In Asia-Pacific, Japan's Akinori Maemura, Atsushi Endo and Hiro Otta, as well as Indonesia's John Sihar Simanjuntak have long record in internet technical operations and coordination, and Bruce Tonkin (Australia) is a key figure in technical and policy development.
