AFrican and Middle East ccTLD Registries

In Africa and the Middle East, ccTLDs are globally still underdeveloped. Until 2024 and the blocking of activity of the controversial Dutch company Freenom, several sub-Saharan Africa registries had even chosen to lease their national TLD to them.

The Africa Top Level Domains Organization (AfTLD) provides a forum for ccTLD managers from the African Region to discuss issues related to managing ccTLD registries.

Major African and Middle East ccTLD Registries

In South Africa, .ZA is successfully managed by ZADNA, which also oversees Dot AFRICA and plays a significant role in shaping Internet governance across the continent. Among the best-performing African registries are Nigeria’s NIRA for .NG, KENIC for .KE in Kenya, ANRT for .MA in Morocco, and ATI for Tunisia’s .TN.
