What are ccTLD Registries?

A ccTLD (country code top-level domain) is a type of top-level domain used to identify a specific country, sovereign state, or dependent territory on the Internet. These domains consist of two-letter codes, such as .US for the United States, .DE for Germany, .JP for Japan, etc. In theory, national TLDs are under the control of the country they represent, but this rule still has exceptions, due to the way they were created starting in 1985.

Official Organisms

In most countries, managing a ccTLD is considered a public service mission, generally carried out by an organization external to the State, whether under a mandate, contract, tender, or another arrangement.

Domain names are an element of intellectual property that has acquired considerable importance in business life. As a technical creation of ICANN over which they have no control, the States have difficulties making it a well-defined legal object. Depending on the country, various types of organizations with differentes statutes establish rules related to the use of domain names at the national level.
