Despite high population and internet penetration, Asia’s ccTLDs remain underdeveloped. In major Asian countries—and more broadly across the continent—registries are generally not business-oriented, often impose restrictions on ccTLD registrations, and invest little in promotion. Several support IDN extensions to allow domain names in local scripts, but their adoption remains very low.
Founded in 1998 as a non-profit entity and incorporated in Malaysia, APTLD (Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Association) is an organization for ccTLD registries in the Asia Pacific region.
CNNIC manages .CN, the Chinese national extension and one of the largest in the world. The IDN version, .中国, represents less than 1% of total Chinese ccTLD registrations.
JPRS in Japan and KISA in South Korea, which manage .JP and .KR respectively, are well-regarded for their technical expertise and consistent adherence to international standards. However, both have traditionally enforced strict registration policies. The relatively low registration volumes also reflect the unique nature of these markets, where digital presence often leans more toward apps and alternative online platforms.
INRegistry operates .IN, the domain extension for India. Thanks to the absence of registration restrictions, it has grown alongside the country’s digital expansion. A notable feature is that .IN domains cannot be traded on the secondary market by registrars.
Not technically a ccTLD but well integrated into the Asian domain landscape, DotAsia Organisation manages .ASIA, targeting individuals and businesses with ties to the Asia-Pacific region.
In Oceania, ccTLDs carry strong national significance. .AU, managed by auDA, is heavily used and well-regulated in Australia. In New Zealand, InternetNZ oversees .NZ, which is also widely adopted. Several territories in the region use their ccTLDs strategically, serving both local identity and niche global markets — such as .TV, .WS, .TO, and .PW.
