The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is a Chinese government agency created in 2008 to oversee industry, telecommunications, and information technology. It manages China’s internet infrastructure, including an alternative DNS root system separate from ICANN. Through MIIT, China controls domain name registration and operates its own root servers, reinforcing national sovereignty over internet access.
