Directory >> Registries >> Repurposed ccTLD
Some country-code domain extensions are referred to as quasi-generic because they are marketed and used globally, beyond their original national purpose. Extensions like .TV, .CO, .ME, and .IO are technically ccTLDs but behave commercially as if they were generic domains. This concept is recognized in ICANN documents, where these repurposed ccTLDs are described as operating similarly to gTLDs, despite their country-specific origins.
Most of these extensions are managed by major registry operators; for example, .TV is operated by GoDaddy Registry and .IO by Identity Digital. However, some remain partially independent, such as .CO managed by CO Internet S.A.S. and .ME operated by DoMEn d.o.o., or fully independent, like Zenaida for .AI domains, Global Domains International for .WS, BRS Media for .FM and .AM, Tonic for .TO, Ola for .CV and TM Domain Registry for .TM.
Previously managed by Freenom, dot TK is now in transition, with Teletok (Tokelau's telecom) exploring alternatives.
