Freedom was a private domain registry company founded in 2010, based in the Netherlands. It managed several country-code top-level domains (ccTLDs), including .TK (Tokelau), .ML (Mali), .GA (Gabon), .CF (Central African Republic), and .GQ (Equatorial Guinea), under agreements with the respective countries.
The registry offered free domain registrations for these TLDs, monetizing traffic from expired or unused domains. This model led to massive adoption but also to widespread abuse—spam, phishing, and malware—causing reputational issues for the TLDs involved. Freedom Registry's operations ended in 2023, after legal disputes with Meta and other large brands, as well as with governments that began reclaiming control over their ccTLDs.
