Verisign was founded in 1995 as a spin-off from RSA Security, by James Bidzos, and today it is a publicly traded company owned by institutional investors like Berkshire Hathaway. It is the registry for the COM and NET extensions. It used to be the technical operator for a large number of registries, but this activity has diminished dramatically
Verisign also maintains and distributes the root zone file on behalf of IANA and manages the DNSSEC root zone signing key.
