IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority)

What is IANA ?

IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) is an organisation that manages key elements of the Internet's technical infrastructure. It is responsible for allocating IP numbers, managing country codes (such as .FR or .US), port numbers for network protocols and Internet protocol parameters.

IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) is a function, not an independent entity. It refers to a set of technical operations essential to the internet’s infrastructure, such as managing the DNS root zone, IP address allocation, and protocol parameter assignments. Since 2016, these IANA functions have been performed by Public Technical Identifiers (PTI), a non-profit affiliate fully owned by ICANN.

PTI is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day technical work, while ICANN provides oversight and policy direction.
