American Registrars

The American Leadership

GoDaddy

Founded in 1997, GoDaddy is the leading domain name registrar in the world, far ahead of all its competitors. The company has managed to become one of the greatest successes of the Internet without any notable expertise or added value compared to other players in the sector. The success achieved is primarily the result of aggressive marketing and historical focus on market share rather than on making profits.

Namecheap

The American registrar Namecheap is the smallest and most agile player in the global top. This gives it a considerable advantage over its competitors in terms of service fluidity. Coupled with a low-cost pricing policy and significant communication efforts, this strategy enables it to host over twenty million domain names. Namecheap also differs from the other American leaders in its lower concern regarding domain name abuse, resulting in a higher rate of cybersquatting and fraud among its customers.

Newfold Digital

Newfold Digital specializes in Internet hosting, with leading brands such as BlueHost and HostGator. Since its acquisition of Web.com from Siris Capital in 2021, the American investment fund Clearlake Capital, which already owned Endurance Group, has become a major player in the domain name sector. The activities related to domain names and hosting are grouped under the brand Newfold Digital.

Web.com owns dozens of registrars, primarily serving its business of recovering expired domain names, in which it is one of the two leaders, alongside Dropcatch. Newfold Digital owns the Indian registrar PublicDomainRegistry (PDR) as well as other historical American brands but mostly operating from India Domain.com, FastDomain, Bigrock and ResellerClub.

Tucows

The Canadian group Tucows markets its reseller offer under the brand OpenSRS and owns the registrars Enom, Ascio, and Hover, all with limited value for money. Its market value has decreased by a factor of 6 between 2022 and 2023 and has not recovered since.

Other American Players

The American public website creation service Squarespace is among the largest registrars in the world, since it acquired Google's registrar activity in 2023.

Formerly a popular American registrar among domainers, Namesilo was acquired by a Canadian investment fund, leading to a notable increase in market share.

Dynadot is a global-sized American registrar, with locations in the United States, Canada, and China. It is one of the last major registrars that has escaped the sector's consolidation trend.

Other large American registrars include Directnic, Epik, InternetBS (Bahamas, Team Internet Group), Launchpad, Moniker, Name, Namebright, Porkbun and Spaceship.
