White-label reseller registrars give access to their customers, mostly registrars, web hosting companies and domain investors, to the classic registrar functions (domain name registrations, renewals, transfers, etc.), without the need to be an accredited registrar themselves.
Domain name resellers target major internet service providers and holders of large domain names portfolios. They operate similarly to wholesalers, but some resellers also accept individual clients with occasional needs. Additional services such as DNS management are usually offered as well.
The main players of the resellers market are CentralNic Reseller and Key-Systems (Team Internet) OPenSRS / Enom / Ascio (Tucows Group), Wild West Domains (GoDaddy), ResellerClub (Newfold Digital), InternetX (United-Internet), Realtime Register (Your.online) and OpenProvider.
Registration fees with resellers registrars are generally close to cost price. Resellers get their profit from subscription fees and additional services such as email management, SSL certificates or website hosting.
In most cases, registrar reseller services are far more convenient than being an accredited registrar.
For full control over your domain names, it is possible to become an accredited registrar, but ICANN accreditation is complex and costly. It is generally easy and economic to become a accreditate registrar for ccTLD domains, but this requires being accreditated for as much ccTLD as one registrar needs. To manage clients, a system such as WHMCS must be installed.
