godaddy

The world's leading domain registrar

Founded in 1997, GoDaddy is the leading domain name registrar worldwide, far ahead of all its competitors. This success is all the more remarkable given that GoDaddy is a company with a disturbing mercantilist philosophy, offers no email support, has a bug-filled interface, and exhibits excessive commercial aggressiveness.

Registration prices are not competitive, unless you subscribe to the Domain Discount Club or use discount coupons.

Main GoDaddy Subsidiaries in the Domain Name Sector

Wild West Domains and 123 Reg are major domain name registrars owned by GoDaddy.

GoDaddy Corporate Domains handles registration, transfers, domain strategy, and protection, focusing on security, efficiency, and centralized control.

GoDaddyRegistry and its subsidiaries such as Registry Services operates about 240 top-level domains (TLDs) on behalf of sovereign nations, city governments and global brands.

With Afternic and Dan, GoDaddy is the leading player in the domain name marketplaces sector.

A major player in prerelease domains

GoDaddy auctions off all domain names not renewed by its clients (prerelease), amounting to several thousand each day. Domains that receive no bids are available for two days at a buy-now price (GoDaddy Closeouts), usually around 15 euros. Using these services is complex and requires experience, especially due to the platform's many issues and pitfalls.

After paying a modest annual entry fee, expired domains are available in the “Expired Auctions,” ten-day auctions with a starting price of $12 for .COM and .NET domains (in reality closer to $25 due to taxes and renewal fees).

Winning a domain in prerelease requires outbidding the competition and sometimes bots that bid up prices on domains users have identified. One way to avoid this is not to initiate bids and wait for domains to appear in Closeouts right after the auction ends, typically for around $20.

Other GoDaddy services

GoDaddy offers a free monitoring service for domain expiration dates, an underperforming expired domain backorder service, and a poorly functioning domain name marketplace.
