The e-commerce giant Alibaba sells domain names through its Alibaba Cloud brand and its subsidiary HiChina, the number one web hosting company in China.
The leading Japanese registrar, Onamae, belongs to a large Internet group, GMO, which is also the owner or technical operator of a large number of nTLDs.
XinNet is a private Chinese company specializing in domain names and web hosting. The company owes its position among the leaders to a low-cost pricing policy, great communication efforts, and the size of the Chinese market, which remains difficult to access for foreign competitors. XinNet has a significant rate of domain abuse.
There are other significant players not affiliated with large groups, such as ChengDu West in China and WebNic in Singapore, the latter positioning itself as a gateway to Southeast Asian markets.
Other large Asian registrars include Chinese registrars Beijing Lanhai Jiye Technology Co., Ltd and eName, the Japanese registrar Value-Domain and the Turkish registrar Atak Domain.
Currently, no Asian registrar is participating in the global consolidation trend. Their strategies remain focused on serving local demand, often marked by significant volumes of speculative registrations and fraudulent activity.
