SOCATEL, the national telecommunications company of the Central African Republic, serves as the official registry for the .CF top-level domain. In 2013, SOCATEL partnered with Freenom to offer free .CF domain registrations globally. However, this model led to significant misuse, with a large number of .cf domains being associated with malicious activities.
Following Freenom's legal challenges and its subsequent exit from the domain business in 2024, SOCATEL resumed full control of the .CF registry. As of May 5, 2024, new .CF domain registrations are no longer possible, and the registry is undergoing restructuring to enhance security and restore the domain's reputation.
Existing .cf domains remain active, but their management is currently limited. The registry is in discussions with other potential operators to take over the management of the .cf TLD
