What is Afnic?

Afnic (Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération) is a non-profit association which acts as the technical operator for the FR zone as well as for other TLDs. It also offers consultancy, technical assistance and training services to other registries and entities involved in DNS administration.

An Hybrid Statute

Although it has been the operator of .FR since its inception, Afnic is not the statutory registry for .FR. Since 2012, the mission's assignment follows a tender managed by the Ministry of Economy of France. This original model maintains a certain pressure on Afnic, whose results might not have been as good if it had been a state organization..
