.NET is one of the original generic top-level domains created in 1985. It is operated by Verisign under contract with ICANN and is open to all registrants without special eligibility requirements. Historically aimed at network service providers, it is now used broadly across industries. The registry supports standard policies (WHOIS/RDAP, transfers, DNSSEC, and IDNs through accredited registrars).
Once a flagship extension, .NET has fallen somewhat out of fashion. Its recognition, however, remains close to .COM and major country codes like .FR, and it is frequently chosen for a company’s intranet, cloud solutions, DNS infrastructure, and similar technical uses.
