.COM is one of the original generic top-level domains created in 1985. It is operated by Verisign under contract with ICANN and is open worldwide with no special eligibility requirements. Initially aimed at commercial entities, it has become the universal default for businesses and projects of all kinds.
By far the most used extension, .COM was originally reserved for U.S. commercial companies. It quickly replaced .NET as the default choice, with .NET becoming a fallback when .COM was unavailable. Both extensions are operated by Verisign.
