GeoTLDs are the smallest group of new extensions in the nTLD program, with only a few dozen created in the first round. Although they correspond to defined territories, Google treats them as generic extensions.
GeoTLDs are domain extensions tied to cities or regions, created to reinforce local identity and visibility online. They are always supported by the political authority of the territory and not primarily profit-driven, and overall they have been successful. Among the most used are .London and .NYC for major world capitals, Dot Tokyo Registry for Japan’s capital, and DotBERLIN GmbH as the first city TLD ever launched.
