Among the roughly twelve hundred new extensions created in the first 2012 round, nearly 500 are corpTLDs, meaning they are dedicated to a single company, whether for internal needs, marketing, or as the primary vehicle for its online presence.
CorpTLDs include notable successes such as .BARCLAYS, .BNPPARIBAS, and .KPMG. However, few companies had a clear plan for these new extensions, and some either do not use them or have abandoned them.
Applying for a new extension is a recommended option for companies that can afford it, but moving a primary website to a corpTLD address requires expertise, resources, and extensive communication. Although this is changing, such an address still causes confusion for some internet users. In addition, nothing is planned if a company changes its name.
Creating a new extension is currently possible in ICANN’s second round, starting in February 2026. The ICANN application evaluation fee was USD 227,000 per extension, with no guarantee of approval. Annual fees on the order of a few dozen cents per domain name are expected thereafter, as well as the cost of registry operations or “backend,” which can be outsourced to specialized providers.
