Jun Murai

Jun Murai is a pioneering Japanese computer scientist often called the “Father of the Internet in Japan.” He founded JUNET in the 1980s, led the creation of the .jp domain, and co-founded JPNIC, Japan’s internet registry. As a professor at Keio University, he remains active in internet governance and research. He was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame in 2013 for his foundational role in developing Japan’s internet infrastructure.

Biography

Professor Jun Murai created the country's first inter-university network, JUNET, in 1984. He founded the WIDE Project in 1988, a major Internet research consortium where he still serves on the board. A professor and dean at Keio University, he earned his PhD in computer science there in 1987. Murai has held leadership roles as President of JPNIC and Vice President of the Japanese Internet Association. He served on the Internet Society’s Board of Trustees and was one of the founding directors of ICANN, serving from 1998 to 2003. Recognized globally, he received the Jonathan B. Postel Service Award, the IEEE Internet Award, was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame, and was awarded the Legion of Honour by France.
