Registry Africa

What is Registry Africa?

Registry Africa is a non-profit organisation established in 2017 to operate the .africa top-level domain (TLD). It is a wholly owned subsidiary of the ZA Central Registry (ZACR), a South African non-profit entity founded in 1988. The launch of .AFRICA was endorsed by the African Union Commission and supported by 78% of African governments, aiming to provide a unified digital identity for the continent.

Registry Africa faced legal disputes with DotConnectAfrica Trust (DCA), which contested ICANN’s decision to delegate the .AFRICA extension to ZACR. An Independent Review Process found procedural violations by ICANN, delaying the launch. After court rulings, .AFRICA was officially delegated to Registry Africa in 2017.

As of December 2024, over 52,000 .AFRICA domains have been registered through 70 accredited registrars worldwide.
