Namecoin

What is Namecoin?

Namecoin is an open-source blockchain project launched in April 2011 in the United States as the first altcoin derived from Bitcoin. It functions as a decentralized key/value registry, with its main use case being the management of .bit domain names outside the ICANN system. The project also supports applications related to identity and data integrity, though adoption has remained limited.

How to Register a .bit Domain?

.bit domains can be registered directly on the Namecoin blockchain using Namecoin software or wallets that support domain registration. Some third-party platforms and services act as interfaces to simplify the process, but technically the registration happens on the Namecoin network itself.

Difference between Namecoin and Handshake

Namecoin and Handshake are similar in that both are blockchains designed for decentralized domain names. The difference is that Namecoin was the first attempt (2011), limited mainly to the .bit extension, and it never gained wide adoption. Handshake (2020) goes further by letting users create and own many different top-level domains through on-chain auctions, not just one fixed extension.
